The biggest Full Moon Party in the world is held on Haad Rin Nok Beach on the Thai Island of Koh Phangan. It is a party that started in 1987 as an impromptu birthday party but over the years has become a major international event attracting 30,000 party goers every month as well as famous DJs from around the world.

There is something special about the full moon in Koh Phangan. It looks so big and clear at its point of completion. It has become the symbol for a good time for many people. The small town of Haad Rin fills up during the week leading up to the main party. Every night for a week before the party there are events happening on the beaches and in the town. By the time the big night arrives there is a carnival atmosphere that is almost palpable. People daub themselves in body paint and then head into town for a warm-up event. Then they go to the beach.

The Full Moon Party consists of about 10 sound systems attached to bars along the beach. Each sound system has its own sound. Genres range from psy-trance to electro to drum and bass to R ‘n’ B and chart music. There is usually a DJ playing a style of music that suits you. Between the bars are bucket stalls that sell literally buckets of Thai whiskey mixed with Red Bull and coke.

The crowds go wild until about 11am the following day. The moment that the sun rises from the sea is a special one. At this point many people wonder off to their Haad Rin bungalow. The truly hardcore head over to Backyard Pub where there is an after party in full swing until 10pm.

The Full Moon Party costs only 100 Thai Baht to enter ($3) and is free if you stay in Haad Rin. It is probably the best value party in the world!
